"On November 26, 2013, I was teaching a gymnastics class, and while demonstrating a twisting flip into the foam pit, I rolled my ankle and landed at the bottom of the foam pit. I heard a loud pop, but figured I just sprained the ankle or tore some ligaments. The next morning my leg was purple, so I hobbled into Anchorage Fracture Orthopedic Clinic for some x-rays. As I was trying to put my shoe back on, Dr. Thomas came in and went over the x-rays with me and discussed options for surgery to repair the breaks in my ankle. I had broken the condyle of one bone completely off and the other side of my ankle was like a broken picket fence board. As a crossfit athlete and gymnastics coach, I was devastated. I had a powerlifting competition coming up in two weeks and I knew I wasn't going to be doing any competitions for a long time, if ever again. Paige Cripe and the AFOC staff were so helpful and gracious to help me take care of all of the preparations for the surgery, wheeling me down to the surgery center, the lab, and taking care of all of the paperwork for the insurance process. I was in shock and denial and the staff at Anchorage Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic were compassionate, comforting, and answered all of my questions. After surgery, and after three long screws were inserted into my ankle, Dr. Thomas and the staff maintained close contact and follow-up procedures to ensure my healing was going as scheduled. Despite my impatience as an athlete and wanting to push the process, I stuck to the instructions from Dr. Thomas and I am stronger now than I was before the injury. One year later, and I have already competed in a powerlifting meet and won my age group at the Fairbanks Fitness Derby in August, all pain free! Thank you, Dr. Thomas and AFOC staff for your excellent care and service!" - Karen A.
