What Is a Physiatrist?

You are here

Physiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. They are experts at diagnosing the underlying cause of your pain. As part of the diagnostic process, they perform nerve and muscle tests including nerve conduction studies and EMGs (electromyography).

Physiatrists treat sports injuries, work injuries, back and neck pain, joint pain, and nerve pain. They focus on conservative, nonsurgical treatment approaches, including exercise, nutrition, physical therapy, medications, and complementary approaches such as massage, chiropractic care, and acupuncture. If necessary, they can perform minimally invasive procedures such as X-ray guided spine injections and ultrasound-guided injections into joints or muscles or around nerves and tendons.

In addition to treating your medical condition, physiatrists focus on improving your overall quality of life, including your social, emotional, and vocational well-being. They are experts in designing comprehensive and patient-centered treatment plans.
