Anchorage Fracture & Orthopedic Clinic's very own Dr. Gregory Schumacher, sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon, was personally selected as the US Ski Team's official team doctor and traveled with the elite athletes as they competed in the 2015 World Championships in Sweden in February.
Dr. Schumacher has been the team's official doctor since he was personally chosen by the organization in 2009, but the World Championships competition was the biggest stage to which he contributed in his six years holding this position. Dr. Schumacher's responsibilities as the official team doctor are wide-ranging and include the management of the team's overall health as well as the prognosis and treatment of any and all sports-related orthopedic injuries.
"New geographies and extensive travel always introduce a few challenging factors, such as weakened immune systems and, therefore, greater likelihood of sickness," says Dr. Schumacher. "And, of course, the highly physical nature of Nordic skiing comes with a greater potential for injury. I value the great opportunity and responsibility of keeping our athletes safe and healthy as they competed on this elite stage."
