Stephen S. Tower, M.D.

Dr. Stephen Tower observed his first hip replacement surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1980 and realized that he had found his niche. Three years of surgical experience as a General Medical Officer at the Alaska Native Medical Center confirmed his affinity for joint replacement procedures.

Four years of further orthopedic surgical training at Oregon Health Sciences University allowed Dr. Tower to hone his skills in primary and revision hip, knee, and shoulder operations. Here he authored original research in hip replacement and was awarded the Alonzo J. Neufeld Award for scientific contribution. Dr. Tower began surgical private practice in Anchorage in 1992.

Dr. Tower is as a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Washington. He has served many years as the President of the Anchorage Orthopedic Society and developed an annual meeting to serve the continuing medical education needs of Alaskan orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Tower has a strong interest in injury prevention in young Alaskans. He travels to Africa annually to promote early and effective treatment of orthopedic injury.

He bikes to work most days, even through the winter and is a regular competitor in ultra-endurance winter and summer cycling events. Dr. Tower’s wife, Janice, is an accomplished cyclist and health care consultant. They have two children.
