Declan R. Nolan, M.D.

Born, raised, and educated in Ireland, Dr. Declan Nolan completed his orthopedic residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Nolan joined AFOC in 1974. He has a special interest in joint replacement surgery and general orthopedics and was the first surgeon to perform total knee replacement surgery in Alaska. He was also the first in Alaska to use spinal instrumentation for a spine fracture. Although no longer performing surgery, Dr. Nolan still sees his own patients in the clinic and evaluates surgery for his fellow AFOC physicians. His has extensive knowledge of joint replacement surgery and general orthopedics.

Dr. Nolan was the Alaska state representative to the national American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Board of Councilors for six years. He served on the Strategic planning Committee for the Providence Health Systems for four years and is a past president of the Providence Alaska Medical Center medical staff. He has also been a clinical instructor for the Alaska Family Practice Residency Program.

Dr. Nolan now spends part of his time on his wife’s family farm in Michigan, driving tractors and tending the cows. He has been a pilot in Alaska since 1978, with instrument and float ratings. He has often flown himself to Nome for orthopedic clinics.
